The Meteor

8 pg bookmark minizine

"I have learned that humanity holds no great place in nature, not on this world nor any other, and the universe itself holds nothing but contempt for mankind."

What if your bookmark was also a book? A small book, sure, but still a book, with multiple pages, a complete story, and a full-color cover. Wouldn't that be neat?

The Meteor is a 1000 word flash fiction story that was in my notes for years, inspired by pre-code horror comics and the works of writers like HP Lovecraft or Algernon Blackwood. I'd originally imagined it as a comic, but honestly I think it works better in text, where I can channel my inner sesquipedalian and indulge in the kind of overwrought prose that's a hallmark of the weird fiction genre.

The structure of the zine feels novel, but it's just an 8pg minizine folded vertically and printed on newsprint. Printing on newsprint echoes the disposable quality of vintage pulp fiction and keeps the zine thin enough to work as a bookmark. It also angers my laser printer, but alas, we must all suffer for our art.
